Welcome to the Speech Therapy Department Webpage
This site was created to help parents find information and resources for their child with a Speech Language Impairment.
What is a Speech Language Pathologist?
A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is a highly trained professional with a Masters Degree in Communication Disorders who evaluates and treats children and adults who have difficulty with speech and/or language. A SLP is trained to work with a variety of communication disorders including, but not limited to: articulation, phonology, apraxia, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language deficits.
What is the Referral Process?
1. The teacher comes to the school Local Case Management Team (LCMT) or Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) with concerns about speech/language development.
2. The teacher and SLP fill out a Teacher Analysis/Input Form to determine specific areas of concern.
3. If screening for articulation (speech sounds) is needed, teacher obtains parent permission for SLP to complete screening.
4. The SLP provides a list of interventions to the teacher and gives recommendations along with materials needed to complete the interventions.
5. The teacher implements interventions at least 2-3 times per week for approximately a 3 week period.
6. The SLP, teacher and/or LCMT review interventions. If little progress was made, the paperwork is given to the LEA (principal, or assistant principal) to complete additional paperwork.
7. If further testing is recommended, permission to test is sent home to parents.
8. Once the permission to test is received the SLP will complete necessary testing and contact parents to review results to determine eligibility.
